Official: Motorola Cliq Android Smartphone Announced

Official: Motorola Cliq Android Smartphone Announced
I think many of us would agree that Motorola hasn’t exactly had a big string of good luck lately. The company was able to cash in on the RAZR, but it hasn’t really enjoyed much success since then. That just might be turning around with the official unveiling of the all new Motorola Cliq. This represents the big M’s first foray into the world of Google Android.

The new Android smartphone was announced this morning as part of a big Motorola event, giving us the first official look at the new device. We’ve seen some leaked shots and some other codenames, but now it’s real and it’s very much in the primetime.

The Motorola Cliq comes powered by Google Android, as mentioned, but it gets a new user interface that Motorola that focuses on social networking. It’s called Motoblur and it’s supposed to give you quick access to things like Twitter and Facebook.

Other highlights include the 3G connectivity, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixel camera, customizable RSS news widgets, photosharing, a regular d-pad (for games), microSD expansion, and a 3.1-inch screen with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution. You also get 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with A2DP.

Look for the Motorola Cliq Android smartphone to launch exclusively through T-Mobile at a price yet to be determined.

No More Windows Mobile for Sony Ericsson?

No More Windows Mobile for Sony Ericsson?
So, Sony Ericsson wanted to give smartphones a try and so they turned to the world of Windows Mobile to produce the first XPERIA X1. For the upcoming Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2, this dedication to Microsoft’s mobile platform is continuing, but it seems that is where the relationship is going to end. Nope, Sony Ericsson apprarently has no interest in Windows Mobile anymore.

This is still very much an unsubstantiated rumor at this point, but it seems that the XPERIA X2 will be the last Sony Ericsson smartphone to use Windows Mobile. Instead, there is a very good chance that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 (Rachael) will get the Google Android treatment. Further still, we’re hearing that the SE Satio gets Symbian S60.

In this way, it’s not like Sony Ericsson is jumping ship from Microsoft onto just one competitor. Instead, it seems that Sony Ericsson is spreading its wings and trying its hand at a few different options. Who knows? We might end up with some sort of custom Linux implementation in the future too.

We do know, at least in the short term, that the original XPERIA X1 will be given the ability to upgrade itself to Windows Mobile 6.5 and that the XPERIA X2 will get that version too. Beyond that, it seems that SE wants no part of Windows Mobile 7.

Verizon Shouts with Nokia 7705 Twist Feature Phone

Verizon Shouts with Nokia 7705 Twist Feature Phone
You may have spotted some of the strange patents that Nokia filed several months ago, going for a completely new form factor in the world of cell phones. One of those patents has now officially seen the light of day. Here is the new Nokia 7705 Twist, a cell phone that literally twists and shouts.

The spinning form factor is similar, I suppose, to some of those “switchblade” style phones that we have seen in the past, but the pivoting point is not in the center-top. It’s off to one corner. You’ll also notice that, in its closed form, the Nokia 7705 Twist is a square rather than a regular rectangular bar.

Spinning the phone reveals a full QWERTY keyboard for handling your text messaging and email sending requirements. This is no swiveling smartphone, but the QWERTY keyboard certainly comes in handy for texting fanatics. Other highlights include the 2.4″ QVGA screen, stereo Bluetooth, 2.5mm port, 3-megapixel camera, photo editing software, and integration with all sorts of Verizon services.

The Nokia 7705 Twist feature phone is set to launch through the Verizon Wireless website this coming Sunday. Expect to pay $99 with a two-year service agreement, assuming that you’re willing to deal with a $50 mail-in rebate. For in-store purchases, you’ll have to wait until September 21.

Culture

Mobile is home to an array of cultural influences with its mixed French, Spanish, Creole and Catholic heritage, in addition to British and African, distinguishing it from all other cities in the state of Alabama. The annual Carnival celebration is perhaps the best illustration of this. Mobile has the oldest Mardi Gras celebration, dating to the early 1700s of French colonial times. Carnival in Mobile has evolved over the course of 300 years from a sedate French Catholic tradition into a mainstream multi-week celebration across the spectrum of cultures.[52]

Souktel

Souktel, an SMS service based in the Middle East and East Africa, is all about connections. The service, launched in 2006, uses SMS to connect users to everything from jobs and internships to humanitarian aid and youth leadership programs.

The name comes from "souk," the Arabic word for "marketplace," and "tel," or "telephone. Although at least 80 percent of people in Palestine have access to mobile phones, most people have Internet access only in cafés or public places, said Jacob Korenblum, co-founder of Souktel. "Getting information about medical care, jobs, and food bank services can be difficult," he said. And even at Internet cafes, Korenblum said that many people, especially women, lack access to these services. "We wanted to develop a very simple service," he said. "That's how Souktel started."
